Alexander Matchugovsky Hi, I am Alexander

Product designer and design team lead

I have launched 7 new products. The full cycle: information architecture, design system, visual design, prototyping and copywriting. The WeavePay and Ingos apps – financial mobile apps I have designed from scratch – each consist of more than 170 screens, not including animated prototypes. In addition to this, I worked on improving several existing mobile apps. If you’d like to see an example of how I design layouts, feel free to check out Figma.

Data-driven design

I collect statistics on user behaviour, conduct quantitative and qualitative research, user interviews and carry out usability testing. The benefits of data-driven design are undeniable. However, this does not mean that we need to pre-test every single screen, as if we were completely unsure of what we are doing. A good designer bases their decisions on science, where all the experiments and tests have already been carried out. This saves time and allows us to test only what is really necessary.

Desktop and web applications

I was responsible for Acronis’ flagship product across 4 releases, as well as for particularly complex B2B products at Unlimit, WeavePay, Yandex and InvestEngine.

Simplifying complex scenarios

What if a user decides to log out on a mobile device that’s used for two-factor authentication (and why would users do that)? What if a user, whilst offline, enters a licence key on more computers than the licence permits? Is it possible to make placing a buy-stop order on an exchange as simple as buying shares? Is it possible to increase the registration conversion rate by 750%? If the server takes a long time to generate the documents that the user needs to download – is there a way to speed this up?

I worked on these and many other, even more complex tasks at InvestEngine, Open Investments, Ingos, WeavePay and Acronis, making extensive use of statistical data. For more details, see my case studies.

How I used AI agents for reverse engineering

I’ve done a lot of reverse engineering in the past, and I can say that without AI, this sort of work would have taken 2-3 times as long.

AI-powered design

The lack of comprehensive documentation and a complete customer journey map is a problem I have encountered at several companies. This has always made the work of designers and the compliance team more difficult. So, I’ve built product audit tools that work not only from screenshots and Figma files, but from the product’s source code itself. They read the code and assemble an advanced customer journey map, a flowchart and a map of screens, and highlight likely usability problems – for instance, application states the user is never informed about.

Obviously, I use AI to generate images, carry out research and create prototypes – that’s hardly surprising these days. AI is good at carrying out tasks, but I don’t rely on it to generate ideas, because the responsibility for the product vision lies entirely with the human, and because neural networks, by their very architecture, tend to produce average results rather than the best ones. Rather than choosing from a selection of mediocre ideas suggested by AI, I save time and come up with the best solution straight away.

Cross-team cooperation

at UK and international financial and IT companies. Art direction, process optimisation, improving quality, team performance and time to market. Building a completely new design team. My principles are: get to the heart of the matter, listen to people, rely on science, make decisions quickly, don’t add clutter, good doesn’t mean slow.

Industry awards

I led the design of a number of award-winning products. Here are some of them:

Artistic and technical education

5 years of study at the Department of AI at the Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (Higher School of Economics). Fun fact: I was invited to teach at the Design Faculty at my institute.

6 years of studying classical art subjects, including composition and art history. Not very often, but if I need to produce graphics at short notice or illustrate an idea, or make a logo, I’m happy to pick up a pencil or open a vector editor.
